Chapter 30

Soaking wet from the atrocious weather, Michael peered over the window ledge to see if the man was still in the room. All he saw was a woman’s legs sticking out from under the windowsill.

He climbed back inside, being careful to make as little noise as possible. He stepped over the woman’s body lying prone on the floor and knelt beside her. Adrenaline had kicked in, and although his heart beat like a hammer, the shaking had stopped, leaving him feeling surprisingly calm, given the enormity of the situation.

As expected, David was right behind him. He’d never abandoned his brother before, and Michael knew he wouldn’t do it now in the moment of his greatest need.

An angry stare was all he got from David, but they both knelt beside the fallen woman, who was face down on the floor. Michael gently turned her over, and he choked when he saw her face.

It was Gerda! Her eyes were closed, and Michael gently raised her head and held her in his soaked arms.

“Gerda, I’m so sorry. Please don’t die, not for us.” He gently shook her, and as he did, he saw a large pool of dark liquid on the floor beneath her. Her chest was oozing blood, and the two boys exchanged anxious looks as they realised her life was in the balance.

Shouts and yells from behind the closed door made him flinch as he rocked Gerda back and forth like a parent would rock a newborn child. Her eyes flickered open, and she grabbed Michael’s arm with a blood-soaked hand.

“I’m so sorry.” Tears fell freely, joining the rainwater that fell onto Gerda’s damaged body. A wave of relief washed over him as he whispered into her ear. “You’re going to be okay, Gerda. We’ll get you out of here and find a doctor.”

“Go back to England and tell the world what they are doing to us,” Gerda struggled to speak. “Don’t die here with us today. That’s how you can help us. That’s how you can help Frank.”

She opened her hand and showed Michael a crumpled piece of paper she was gripping. “Find Father Eise.”

Gerda’s eyes flickered and closed. Michael held her tightly, trying his best to control the heaving in his chest. David placed his hand over Michael’s mouth and whispered in his ear.

“Quiet, Michael. They’re still here.” He pointed to the closed door of the bedroom.

Michael’s insides were quivering and burning, and a red mist descended on him with an intensity he’d never experienced before. He gently laid Gerda’s head back down and made sure she looked comfortable.

With fire raging through his veins, he joined David at the door. “It’s awful, but now isn’t the time to grieve,” David said.

Michael nodded, glad of David’s ever-wise presence.

Screams and yells told the boys the Gestapo were working on Sophie and Stefan, so Michael cracked the door open gently so they could see what was happening.

Sophie was on her knees with her hands behind her head. She was trying to speak through loud sobs because of what the men were doing to Stefan.
